Kampala Metropolitan Police has arrested 25 suspected criminals involved in violent phone-snatching along the Northern Bypass, a hotspot for such attacks during heavy traffic hours.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the suspects were arrested during an intelligence-led operation conducted on Friday around the Double Q area, where motorists and passengers have frequently fallen victim to the growing crime trend.
Police said the suspects were caught in the act, grabbing phones from individuals stranded in traffic. Eight motorcycles allegedly used to facilitate the crimes were also impounded during the operation.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy PRO for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said several witnesses have already recorded statements, and police have secured video footage capturing the suspects committing the offences. All 25 suspects are being held at Nateete Police Division.
He added that similar operations will continue throughout the festive season to deter criminal activities and ensure the safety of road users.
“We assure the public that deployments during traffic jam hours will continue, especially as we enter the festive season, to curb this criminal activity and enhance the safety of road users,” Owoyesigyire said.
He further appreciated the public for its continued vigilance and cooperation as police work to dismantle criminal networks targeting commuters.
