A deadly shooting at Shumuk Aluminium Ltd in Nakawa Division on the evening of January 30, 2025, left three people dead, including the shooter.
Authorities are investigating the incident, which claimed the lives of two security guards before the perpetrator took his own life.
Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said Emmanuel Machugayi, a security guard employed by Ryayo Security Group Ltd, fatally shot his colleagues, Ashiraf Kakyebezi, 21, and Stephen Owechi.
According to initial reports, Machugayi accessed a firearm from a fellow guard and opened fire without provocation.
After the attack, Machugayi fled but was soon surrounded by security forces. Rather than face capture, he turned the weapon on himself.
The Jinja Road Police Division responded swiftly and launched an investigation. Officers recovered three bodies, two rifles, and several cartridges as evidence.
The bodies were transported to Mulago KCCA Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Eyewitnesses, including the first security officers on the scene, have provided statements, but the motive remains unclear. Authorities are working to determine what led to the tragic event.
“This is a deeply troubling and senseless loss of life,” Owoyesigire said. “We are committed to uncovering the facts and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
The incident has sparked concerns about the safety and mental well-being of private security personnel.
Experts stress the need for better mental health support, stricter firearm access protocols, and improved conflict resolution strategies within security teams.
As investigations continue, police urge anyone with relevant information to come forward. Authorities have pledged to keep the public informed as new details emerge.
